Subtopics in this chapter
- 10.1 Engineering drawings and its concepts
- 10.2 Engineering Economics
- 10.3 Project planning and scheduling
- 10.4 Project management
- 10.5 Engineering professional practice
- 10.6 Engineering Regulatory Body
What is usually tested
Drawing questions cover sheet sizes, scales, line types, and orthographic, isometric and sectional views. Economics questions ask about the time value of money, NPV, IRR, payback period and depreciation. Project questions cover the life cycle, work breakdown, bar charts, CPM and PERT, risk, financing, tendering and contracts. The chapter ends with professional ethics, safety, the Nepal Engineers' Association and the provisions of the Nepal Engineering Council Act.
Sample questions with answers
Try each question before opening the answer. These 12 are taken from the 183 questions for this chapter in the practice bank.
1. In the ISO A series of drawing sheets, the A0 sheet has an area of: (10.1 Engineering drawings and its concepts)
- One square metre
- Half a square metre
- Two square metres
- One square foot
Show answer
Answer: A. One square metre
A0 measures 841 mm x 1189 mm; each smaller size has half the area of the one before.
2. The size of an A4 drawing sheet is: (10.1 Engineering drawings and its concepts)
- 297 mm x 420 mm
- 210 mm x 297 mm
- 420 mm x 594 mm
- 148 mm x 210 mm
Show answer
Answer: B. 210 mm x 297 mm
A3 is 297 mm x 420 mm, twice the area of A4.
3. Under the NPV method, a project is considered acceptable when NPV is: (10.2 Engineering Economics)
- Negative
- Zero or negative
- Greater than zero
- Equal to the initial investment
Show answer
Answer: C. Greater than zero
A positive NPV means returns exceed the cost of capital.
4. Straight-line depreciation charges: (10.2 Engineering Economics)
- More in early years
- An equal amount every year
- More in later years
- Only in the first year
Show answer
Answer: B. An equal amount every year
The asset's value is reduced by the same amount each year.
5. The critical path in a project network is the: (10.3 Project planning and scheduling)
- Longest path
- Shortest path
- Path with most activities
- Path with least cost
Show answer
Answer: A. Longest path
The longest path determines the minimum project duration.
6. PERT uses how many time estimates for each activity? (10.3 Project planning and scheduling)
- One
- Two
- Three
- Four
Show answer
Answer: C. Three
Optimistic, most likely, and pessimistic estimates.
7. Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities in order to: (10.4 Project management)
- Meet the project requirements
- Increase the number of staff
- Avoid all planning
- Extend the project duration
Show answer
Answer: A. Meet the project requirements
It covers initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing the project.
8. In a matrix organisation, a project team member typically: (10.4 Project management)
- Reports only to the project manager
- Reports to both a functional manager and a project manager
- Reports only to the chief executive
- Has no supervisor
Show answer
Answer: B. Reports to both a functional manager and a project manager
The dual reporting shares resources efficiently but can cause conflicts of authority.
9. Sustainable development is development that: (10.5 Engineering professional practice)
- Ignores the environment in favour of growth
- Uses resources as fast as possible
- Meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs
- Benefits only the present generation
Show answer
Answer: C. Meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs
This is the definition given by the Brundtland Commission.
10. The main purpose of an environmental impact assessment is to: (10.5 Engineering professional practice)
- Replace the engineering design
- Increase the cost of the project
- Delay the project as long as possible
- Identify and reduce the adverse environmental effects of a project before it is approved
Show answer
Answer: D. Identify and reduce the adverse environmental effects of a project before it is approved
It proposes mitigation measures and a monitoring plan.
11. The Nepal Engineering Council Act was enacted in: (10.6 Engineering Regulatory Body)
- 2045 BS
- 2055 BS
- 2063 BS
- 2075 BS
Show answer
Answer: B. 2055 BS
The Nepal Engineering Council Act was enacted in 2055 BS.
12. According to its preamble, the Nepal Engineering Council Act was made to make the engineering profession effective, to mobilise it in a systematic and scientific manner, and to provide for: (10.6 Engineering Regulatory Body)
- The registration of engineers according to their qualifications
- The construction of government buildings
