This chapter contributes 10 of the 100 questions in the IT Engineering license exam. Below are its subtopics, what is usually tested, and 12 free sample questions with answers and explanations.
Start a full mock test
Subtopics in this chapter
- 4.1 Fundamentals of information system (IS)
- 4.2 Enterprise management systems and knowledge management
- 4.3 Implementations of and applications of information systems
- 4.4 Fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI)
- 4.5 Neural network and probabilistic model
- 4.6 Expert system and swarm intelligence
What is usually tested
The information-system half asks about system controls and audit, the security goals, authentication, ERP, SCM and CRM, decision support, data warehousing, OLAP versus OLTP, data mining, cloud service models, MapReduce and Hadoop. The AI half covers agents and PEAS, search strategies and heuristics, minimax and pruning, supervised versus unsupervised learning, overfitting, perceptrons and backpropagation, Bayesian networks, hidden Markov models, genetic algorithms, expert systems and swarm intelligence.
Sample questions with answers
Try each question before opening the answer. These 12 are taken from the 172 questions for this chapter in the practice bank.
1. Which of the following is NOT one of the basic components of an information system? (4.1 Fundamentals of information system (IS))
- Competitors
- Hardware
- Data
- People
Show answer
Answer: A. Competitors
An information system is made up of hardware, software, data, people, procedures and networks.
2. In a client-server information system architecture, the client is the part that: (4.1 Fundamentals of information system (IS))
- Stores the shared database for all users
- Requests services and presents the results to the user
- Carries out all the processing for every user
- Connects the building to the electricity supply
Show answer
Answer: B. Requests services and presents the results to the user
The server provides the shared data and services that the clients ask for.
3. Which information system supports unstructured, strategic decisions of top executives? (4.2 Enterprise management systems and knowledge management)
- TPS
- MIS
- DSS
- ESS
Show answer
Answer: D. ESS
Executive Support Systems serve top management for strategic decisions.
4. An enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is designed to: (4.2 Enterprise management systems and knowledge management)
- Design the organisation's products
- Manage only the organisation's e-mail
- Integrate the core business processes of an organisation in one system
- Replace the organisation's network hardware
Show answer
Answer: C. Integrate the core business processes of an organisation in one system
Finance, human resources, manufacturing, sales and inventory use one integrated system.
5. When a new information system is implemented, change management is mainly concerned with: (4.3 Implementations of and applications of information systems)
- Buying the cheapest hardware available
- Helping people accept and adapt to the new way of working
- Writing the program code
- Testing the network cables
Show answer
Answer: B. Helping people accept and adapt to the new way of working
Many system failures are caused by people and organisational issues, not by the technology.
6. Lewin's model of organisational change consists of which three stages? (4.3 Implementations of and applications of information systems)
- Analyse, design, code
- Plan, do, check
- Unfreeze, change, refreeze
- Input, process, output
Show answer
Answer: C. Unfreeze, change, refreeze
The old habits are loosened, the change is made, and the new way is then made permanent.
7. The evaluation function used by A* search is: (4.4 Fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI))
- f(n) = g(n)
- f(n) = h(n)
- f(n) = g(n) + h(n)
- f(n) = g(n) × h(n)
Show answer
Answer: C. f(n) = g(n) + h(n)
A* uses actual cost so far g(n) plus heuristic estimate h(n).
8. k-means clustering is an example of: (4.4 Fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI))
- Unsupervised learning
- Supervised learning
- Reinforcement learning
- Semi-supervised learning
Show answer
Answer: A. Unsupervised learning
k-means groups unlabeled data, so it is unsupervised.
9. In a biological neuron, signals from other neurons are received mainly by the: (4.5 Neural network and probabilistic model)
- Dendrites
- Axon
- Myelin sheath
- Nucleus
Show answer
Answer: A. Dendrites
The dendrites collect the incoming signals and the axon carries the output signal away.
10. The junction across which a signal passes from one neuron to the next is called a: (4.5 Neural network and probabilistic model)
- Soma
- Synapse
- Dendrite
- Ganglion
Show answer
Answer: B. Synapse
The weights of an artificial neural network play the role of synaptic strengths.
11. In an expert system, the component that applies rules to facts to reach conclusions is the: (4.6 Expert system and swarm intelligence)
- Knowledge base
- User interface
- Working memory
- Inference engine
Show answer
Answer: D. Inference engine
The inference engine reasons over the knowledge base.
12. An expert system is a program that: (4.6 Expert system and swarm intelligence)
- Imitates the decision making of a human expert in a narrow domain
- Controls the hardware of a computer
- Translates a program into machine code
- Stores multimedia files
Show answer
Answer: A. Imitates the decision making of a human expert in a narrow domain
It applies stored expert knowledge to the facts of a particular case.
